Refugee children cannot access education easily. One UNHCR officer said “give them basic education”.
These children spend their green age in the refugee camps. Over crowded classrooms, those who can access private schools cannot afford them. Those who can be able to finish their primary schools cannot easily access the high school level. It becomes worse when many of them drop schools, get involved in drug abuse, early pregnancies, early marriages, drug addicts, to some extent recruitment as child soldiers in the armed groups in their country of origins.
Today refugees but tomorrow citizens in your communities. It is a much better approach to support the education of refugee children while in the hosting country. Later intervention makes them less competitive, violent when life becomes hard, irresponsible parents in their future home.
While others see failure in them, let us see opportunity and hope.
